Rural Panel
The purpose of the panel is to raise the profile of IHBC by providing a view on rural matters on which the Institute is consulted, be proactive by raising rural issues and also sharing important developments.
The main activities of the Panel will include:-

The main activities of the Panel will include:-
- Advising on and preparing responses to consultations on rural matters relating to the historic environment
- Make recommendations to the Institute on rural matters
- Preparing articles covering rural matters for Context magazine
- Contribute to the preparation of policy notes and briefing papers
- Represent the panel at relevant conferences and events covering rural aspects of heritage protection and disseminating the outcomes
- Contribute to seminars, conferences, road shows or other training events covering rural developments impacting upon the historic environment
- Monitor its own performance, and review its membership and terms of reference to ensure effective operation and communication and recommend any changes it considers necessary to the Policy Committee for approval
- Make regular reports on its activities to the IHBC Policy Committee.

IHBC Technical Panel
The technical panel consists of IHBC members with an interest in technical matters relating to the conservation of historic buildings. These interests cover both traditional materials and techniques and new technologies.
Most panel members have a specialist technical background or a strong interest in technical matters. The panel communicates via e-mail and meets four times a year in different locations.

The role of the Technical Panel
- To serve the needs of the membership of the IHBC and to complement the role of national amenity bodies
- To help promote good technical understanding of building conservation by identifying the need for education training advice notes and publications and by acting to meet those needs
- To be consulted on draft technical literature produced by others and to review recently published technical literature
- To be consulted on proposed changes to building regulations and other legislation
- To consider and assess new products or techniques in the field of building conservation
- To be aware of existing sources of information and to direct enquiries from the membership to the relevant expert, organisation or publication
- To liaise on such matters with organisations involved in building conservation
- To liaise with the Editorial Board on the production of publications

The main activities of the Panel will include:-
- Advising on and preparing responses to consultations on legal matters relating to the historic environment
- Make recommendations to the Institute on legal matters
- Preparing articles covering legal matters for Context magazine
- Contribute to the preparation of policy notes and briefing papers
- Represent the panel at relevant conferences and events covering legal aspects of heritage protection and disseminating the outcomes
- Contribute to seminars, conferences, roadshows or other training events covering legal aspects of heritage protection
- Monitor its own performance, and review its membership and terms of reference to ensure effective operation and communication and recommend any changes it considers necessary to the Policy Committee for approval
- Make regular reports on its activities to the IHBC Policy Committee.

GOVERNMENT LIAISON SECRETARY
Bob Kindred MBE BA IHBC MRTPI is the former Head of Conservation & Urban Design, Ipswich Borough Council and is now in private practice. He has been involved in public and private sector heritage management for over 30 years. He was Editor of `Context' for 9 years until 1999 when he was also awarded the MBE for services to IHBC. He is the Institute’s Government Liaison Secretary and represents IHBC on the UK Association of Preservation Trusts and the Joint Committee of the National Amenity Societies. He is Standing Special Advisor on Heritage to the House of Commons Culture Media & Sport Select Committee and has also served on numerous Government and English Heritage Commissions and Inquiries.

- Make recommendations to the Institute on green matters
- Preparing articles covering green matters for Context magazine
- Formulate content for IHBC policy notes and briefing papers on green matters
- Represent the panel at relevant conferences and events covering green aspects of heritage protection and disseminating the outcomes
- Contribute to seminars, conferences, roadshows or other training events covering green developments impacting upon the historic environment
- Monitor its own performance, and review its membership and terms of reference to ensure effective operation and communication and recommend any changes it considers necessary to the Policy Committee for approval
- Make regular reports on its activities to the IHBC Policy Committee.

The Consultations panel responds to issues and formal consultations from government departments and other international, national and regional bodies relevant to the institute’s work, primarily (but not exclusively) with respect to relevant policy and practice in England and the UK as a whole.
National Branches have separate funding to allow them to mainly respond to their own consultations but there will still be some assistance required and some signing off from national branches. A key objective is to keep such bodies

The process promotes the interests of the Institute to government ministers and departments and other relevant national and regional bodies.
